Power Substation at 9th and Charlotte

Kansas City, MO

RTE Technologies, Inc was the Structural Engineer of Record for an urban substation for KCPL (now Evergy). The client was required by the City of Kansas City to enclose the site in an aesthetic manner. A design competition was held and the winning design included a series of “white wall petals” that provide a secure, barrier fence, while presenting a system of interesting visual barriers around the substation electrical elements.

RTE Technologies, Inc. designed the retaining walls around the perimeter of the site that provided a level site on a previously sloping location, resisted the overturning resulting from a very large underground storm water detention system, and resisted the very large wind forces that result from winds blowing on tall “wall petals” cantilevering above the substation level grade. This project required excellent collaboration between Mussellman-Hall (General Contractor), Coreslab (Precast Panel manufacturer/erector), and RTE Technologies, Inc. resulting in a project that moved quickly, gracefully, and cost effectively.
